Two men were today jailed for contempt after refusing to answer questions during separate Crime and Misconduct Commission (CMC) hearings into unrelated organised crime investigations focusing on illicit drug production and trafficking.
Both were sentenced by Justice Ann Lyons in Brisbane’s Supreme Court.
Leonard Shyti, 31, a self-employed cleaner of Kelvin Grove, who refused to answer questions during a coercive hearing linked to Operation Warrior — the largest and most complex organised crime investigation ever undertaken by the CMC, spanning three states — was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment.
Shyti refused to answer questions at a CMC hearing held in Brisbane in August related to his knowledge of illegal drug activity on the part of Operation Warrior’s primary target.
The investigation which commenced in April 2009, uncovered illicit drug distribution networks in Melbourne, Sydney and North Queensland with links to outlaw motorcycle gangs and an Albanian crime syndicate based in South East Queensland.
Noel Geoffrey Davis, 24, of Eudlo, who has already served 71 days for contempt after refusing to answer questions during a CMC hearing as part of a Sunshine Coast-based investigation, codenamed Operation Hotel Guarana, was sentenced to six months imprisonment to be suspended after serving four months.
Davis refused to answer questions at the hearing, held in Maroochydore in April, regarding the source of material found in an alleged sophisticated amphetamine laboratory located by police at his Eudlo residence.
