Today marks International Access to Information (IAI) Day 2020 and the Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC) is supporting the Queensland Office of the Information Commissioner (OIC) to highlight the importance of providing accurate and relevant information to the community.

CCC Chairperson Alan MacSporran QC said the 2020 IAI Day theme of Building trust through transparency reminds the public sector of the importance of providing access to government information and government services to assist Queenslanders.

“Transparency underpins trust in the work elected officials and public servants do for the community,” Mr MacSporran said.

“The community rightfully expects that the public interest will always come before any private interest. Being transparent, explaining decisions and always acting in good faith contributes to building trust in our public institutions.”

The CCC is proud to support IAI Day 2020 and reminds the public sector of the importance of providing assistance to Queenslanders through access to government information and government services consistent with the Right to Information Act 2009 (RTI Act) and the Information Privacy Act 2009 (IP Act).

While the CCC fully supports the release of information via RTI and information privacy schemes, it is also crucial that the public sector remains vigilant in protecting confidential and personal information.

“The misuse of confidential information by the public sector is a matter of significant public interest and it remains an area of focus for the CCC,” Mr MacSporran said.

The CCC is an independent agency combating major crime and reducing corruption for the benefit of the Queensland community.

The CCC is a proud supporter of IAI Day (formerly Right to Information Day), which is led by the Office of the Information Commissioner. The day acknowledges the Right to Information Act 2009 and its contribution to facilitating greater access to government-held information.
