An unemployed 41-year-old Jimboomba man, who refused to answer questions during a Crime and Misconduct Commission (CMC) hearing into organised crime, was today sentenced in the Brisbane Supreme Court to eight months jail for contempt.
Grant Jeffrey Beale was questioned by the CMC as part of Operation Echo Slam, an on-going investigation into the criminal activity of a south-east Queensland crime syndicate, including the syndicate’s involvement in the production and trafficking of cannabis and amphetamines.
Beale was called as a witness to a CMC hearing where he had refused to answer questions about his knowledge of the involvement of other persons in drug-related activity. The CMC referred the alleged contempt to the Supreme Court.
Beale appeared today before Chief Justice Paul de Jersey, who found him guilty of contempt and sentenced him to eight months imprisonment.
