Criminal and administrative lawyer Warren Strange has been appointed as the Crime and Misconduct Commission’s new Assistant Commissioner, Misconduct.

CMC Chairperson Martin Moynihan AO QC has welcomed Mr Strange who has held the position of Director, Criminal Law Services with Legal Aid Queensland (LAQ) for the past five years.

‘The position of Assistant Commissioner, Misconduct is a complex role overseeing our complaints-handling process, monitoring regime, investigations into serious misconduct and our program of capacity-building within the Queensland Police Service and public sector.

‘Mr Strange is well qualified for the job having led a large team, including managers, lawyers and administrative staff, at Legal Aid Queensland. He currently represents LAQ in a number of external forums, including the Criminal Law Working Group of National Legal Aid.

‘He is also a member of the Queensland Law Society’s Committee for Specialist Accreditation in Criminal Law and the Society’s Criminal Law Section.

‘He has a good understanding of how our organisation functions after spending more than 12 years at the CMC and the former Criminal Justice Commission in various roles.

‘Prior to leaving the CMC in late 2004, Mr Strange held the position of Deputy Director, Misconduct. While in that role he was responsible for overseeing one of the organisation’s most significant reports, Protecting Children, which arose from a CMC inquiry into Queensland’s foster care system,’ Mr Moynihan said.

Mr Strange has a Master of Laws from the Queensland University of Technology and Bachelor degrees in Law and Science from the University of New South Wales.

He was admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales in 1987 and as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland in 1988.

Mr Strange will commence at the CMC as Assistant Commissioner, Misconduct on 15 June and replaces Stephen Lambrides who retired last year after working at the CMC and the former CJC for 20 years.
