The Crime and Misconduct Commission (CMC) will celebrate the 50th anniversary of NAIDOC week in Rockhampton, Ipswich and Brisbane this year as the organisation continues to work with Indigenous communities to combat crime and misconduct.
CMC Chairperson Robert Needham said NAIDOC Week, from 9 – 13 July, is a wonderful opportunity to focus on the positive relationships we had formed as Queenslanders.
‘NAIDOC Week is a positive time of celebrating what we have achieved as a Queensland community. The CMC’s celebration this year is based around the theme “Moving forward together”,’ Mr Needham said.
‘The CMC recognises the importance of developing and maintaining ongoing genuine relationships and partnerships with the Indigenous community.’
‘We will continue to consult with external agencies and community groups to provide advice and training on good corporate governance. We will also develop effective advice and guidance to address unique problems in Indigenous communities.
‘From time to time the CMC is also involved in public policy issues. Currently, we are reviewing policing in Indigenous communities.’
‘Research officers have been consulting with Indigenous people, police and relevant stakeholders to collect information on how to improve policing in their communities. A report will be presented to parliament early next year.’
During NAIDOC Week CMC staff will be attending celebrations at Brisbane Square on Monday, Goodna’s Evan Marginson Park on Thursday, and Musgrave Park on Friday. Staff will be available to answer questions about the CMC and distribute NAIDOC giveaways.
As part of NAIDOC Week, CMC staff experienced Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture at a special staff morning tea.
This event featured Aboriginal cuisine, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, basket-weaving, and story-telling.
“This NAIDOC morning tea was an opportunity to raise staff awareness about Indigenous culture,” Mr Needham said.
Celebrations will be held around Australia during NAIDOC Week, ending with key events on Black Friday.
