A Far North Queensland police officer has been arrested for allegedly attempting to extort money from a member of the Mareeba community.

The 39-year-old plain clothes police officer was arrested and charged overnight following a Crime and Misconduct Commission operation.

Acting on information received last Thursday, CMC investigators travelled to Mareeba to begin a covert investigation.

It will be alleged that a person with whom the police officer had previous dealings handed over $8000 in the two days leading up to the officer’s arrest.

CMC investigators also searched the police officer’s home and seized money and a computer which will be forensically tested.

The arrested officer will appear in the Mareeba Magistrates Court on 27 February.
