Following the public release by the Queensland Government of the report of the Taskforce on Organised Crime Legislation 2015, the Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC) has determined that it is now appropriate and in the public interest to release all of its submissions to the Taskforce.

The CCC made five confidential submissions to the Taskforce. The submissions have now been re-classified and are deemed public documents because reasons for their earlier in-confidence classification no longer apply.

Since its inception in 2001 following the merger of the Queensland Crime Commission and the Criminal Justice Commission, the CCC (formerly CMC) has always had a focus on organised crime, including outlaw motorcycle gangs.

As an independent statutory authority, the CCC fights major crime and public sector corruption using the tools available to it that are provided by the legislative framework in Queensland. There have been numerous changes to this framework since 2001 and the CCC welcomes reviews to allow relevant parties, including the CCC, to provide their views on an important part of the criminal law.

Many of the issues raised by the CCC in its submissions to the Taskforce are consistent with issues previously raised by the CCC in submissions to the Commission of Inquiry into Organised Crime and ongoing reviews of the Crime and Corruption Act 2001.

The CCC will now review the report and the government’s initial response.  We have also offered to assist the government in its ongoing deliberations.

The CCC will continue to target high risk organised criminal networks to make Queensland as hostile as possible to organised crime.
