The Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC) has completed its investigation into the management and operation of Project Synergy, a fraud prevention project run by the Queensland Police Service Fraud and Cyber Crime Group.
The CCC commenced the investigation in July 2015 after receiving allegations against three officers involved in Project Synergy. The allegations related to the misuse of funds and QPS resources, misuse of corporate credit cards and inappropriate travel practices.
The CCC’s investigation considered whether the subject officers’ conduct would amount to offences against the Criminal Code, including fraud and misconduct in relation to public office.
The CCC did not identify any criminal conduct by officers involved in Project Synergy.
However, the CCC is of the view there is sufficient grounds to warrant disciplinary action against one officer for failing to comply with financial management practices and policies. This has been referred to the QPS for consideration of disciplinary action pursuant to section 49(f) of the Crime and Corruption Act 2001.
During the course of the investigation, 20 additional allegations were identified by the CCC. These allegations relate to possible procedural and policy breaches, not criminal conduct.
These allegation have been referred to the QPS to deal with. The CCC will monitor the way the allegations are dealt with by the QPS by conducting a merit and compliance review.
It is not appropriate for the CCC to comment further whilst the QPS considers the CCC’s referral.
