A 45-year-old man appeared in the Cairns Magistrates Court on Friday 20 June 2014 following a Crime and Misconduct Commission (CMC) investigation. It is alleged that the man possessed and distributed child exploitation material.

CMC investigators, with assistance from officers located at the Queensland Police Service Cairns Child Protection Investigation Unit, executed a search warrant on Thursday 19 June 2014 at an Edmonton address.

The CMC seized computer equipment and a digital camera. The CMC will allege the devices contain child exploitation material, including movies and images.

A small amount of prohibited drugs and drug equipment were also seized.

The 45-year-old man was charged with the following:

  • 4 x s.228D Possessing Child Exploitation Material (Qld Criminal Code 1899);
  • 1 x s.474.19 (1)(a)(i)&(aa)(b)  Use a carriage service to access child pornography material (Commonwealth Criminal Code 1995);
  • 7 x s.474.19(1)(a)(iii)&(aa)(b) Use a carriage service to transmit, make available, publish, distribute, advertise or promote child pornography material, (Commonwealth Criminal Code 1995);
  • 1 x s. 228B (1) Making child exploitation material, (Qld Criminal Code 1899);
  • 1 x s. 9 Possessing Dangerous Drugs (Qld Drugs Misuse Act 1986); &
  • 1 x s. 10A Possess property suspected of having been used in connection with commission of a drug crime (Qld Drugs Misuse Act 1986).

The man was charged on Thursday 19 June and appeared in the Cairns Magistrates Court on Friday.

He was bailed and is expected to re-appear on 13 August 2014.
