The CCC marks its support for International Access to Information (IAI) Day 2020 – formerly Right to Information (RTI) Day – led by the Office of the Information Commissioner. We acknowledge the importance of the right to information and support the 2020 theme of Building trust through transparency.

This name change brings greater consistency across Australia with the United Nations (UN) efforts to promote access to information. In 2020, the UN acknowledges the importance of access to information during times of crisis such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

In Queensland, it remains an important day to commit to the values of open and accountable government, and commitment to our RTI and information privacy laws.

The CCC reflects on our commitment to improving access to information for the community, consistent with the Right to Information Act 2009.

The principles of the RTI Act encourage a culture of openness, transparency and accountability within the public sector. It also contributes to more effective and efficient service delivery which can result in building greater trust in the services we provide to the community.

Wherever possible, the CCC attempts to proactively release information to the community. However, we must also safeguard sensitive information on occasions when its release would be contrary to the broader public interest, impact an investigation or other legislative restrictions or qualifications prevent its release.

The CCC provides regular updates to its oversight committee, the Parliamentary Crime and Corruption Committee about our activities. You can access these reports at: www.parliament.qld.gov.au/work-of-committees/committees/PCCC#.
