As part of Privacy Awareness Week 2020, the Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC) is reminding public servants of their responsibility to adhere to privacy laws when dealing with confidential information.

Privacy Awareness Week (PAW) is led by the Office of the Information Commissioner and the CCC fully supports the initiative. This year’s theme, Be smart about privacy, provides the opportunity to consider the impact of smart technologies such as smart watches, smart TVs and smart home assist devices that aim to deliver efficiency and boost productivity, but also collect data and have the potential to contribute to the misuse of confidential information.

All public sector workers have a responsibility under the Information Privacy Act 2009 (IP Act) to protect and respect personal information.

To coincide with PAW, the CCC has published a guide to help public sector agencies identify and manage matters involving the misuse of confidential information. The guide highlights decision points and courses of action when dealing with a matter involving the suspected misuse of confidential information.

The guide is now available at: https://www.ccc.qld.gov.au/publications/ccc-guide-assessing-allegations-about-misuse-confidential-information

PAW is a reminder that public sector agencies should be guided by the privacy principles and comply with the Information Privacy Act 2009, especially during times where remote working has increased.
