Review of off-road motorbike noise laws

Overview

Our review of Queensland noise laws in 2009, found that they were not effective in reducing excessive noise made by motorbikes in off-road areas.

A call for public comment in the course of the review resuled in submissions from:

  • councils
  • the general public
  • government agencies and departments
  • interest groups and stakeholders
  • state and local government members.

In April 2010 we issued a report of our findings that included recommendations for sustainable improvement of these laws.

Current status

The Department of Communities, Sport and Recreation dedicated twelve months to studying and analysing the recommendations in our report. The Queensland Government released the resulting Off-Road Motorcycling Management Strategy in July 2011.

The Strategy addresses all CMC recommendations except numbers 9 and 10.

  • Recommendation 9 is being addressed separately through the development of information for all recreational uses of trails, rather than focusing solely on off‑road motorcycling.
  • Recommendation 10 is being considered as part of a broader user-pays system for recreational activities on public land.
