CMC statement on police discipline system review — 24.05.2011

The Crime and Misconduct Commission welcomes the opportunity to make a submission about recommendations contained in an independent report examining Queensland’s police discipline system and the handling of complaints against police.

The report, released today, was compiled by an independent panel established by the state government following the CMC’s report Setting the standard: a review of current processes for the management of police discipline and misconduct matters.

CMC Chairperson Martin Moynihan AO QC says the CMC’s report released in December last year assisted the independent panel to further explore an issue which is of great public interest.

‘Both the CMC and the Queensland Police Service were part of a steering committee which provided advice and input to the panel’s review. We brought to the table our experience and knowledge with the intention of improving the police discipline system,’ Mr Moynihan said.

‘If community confidence in the QPS is to be maintained, then a fair and robust discipline system is essential to ensure police accountability and integrity. The CMC fully supports public debate on this issue.’

The CMC, along with other stakeholders, now has an opportunity to make a submission to the state government on the report’s recommendations by 5 July 2011.
