Allegations against directors of Queensland Racing — 25.08.2008

The Crime and Misconduct Commission will not investigate allegations of vote-rorting concerning Queensland Racing Limited (QRL).

A complaint alleging improper conduct at a recent QRL meeting was referred to the CMC by the Under Treasurer.

CMC Chairperson Robert Needham said the matter had now been assessed.

‘Section 59 of the Racing Act 2002 provides that QRL, as a racing control body, is a unit of public administration – and therefore subject to the CMC’s jurisdiction – ‘to the extent of the control body's operations for the purposes of performing its function under this Act.’

‘The allegations do not concern QRL’s operations for the purposes of performing its function as the thoroughbred control body, but are issues relating to the voting process to amend the corporation’s constitution.

‘These are more properly issues for the Australian Securities and Investment Corporation (ASIC).’
