Crime and Misconduct Commission on the move — 06.08.2008

The Crime and Misconduct Commission is moving from its current Brisbane CBD premises to new accommodation in Fortitude Valley.

CMC Chairperson Robert Needham said the organisation would be located in the North Tower in the Green Square precinct as of 16 August with the move expected to be completed by 25 August.

‘It will be business as usual for the CMC.  Relocation to the Valley means that we will still be accessible to the community, and our door is still open to members of the public to come to see us with their concerns,’ Mr Needham said.

‘The move has been necessary as the CMC has outgrown the current office space and staff need a larger and more functional work environment in which to carry out their work in fighting crime and corruption.

‘Our agency has significantly changed in the past eight years,’ Mr Needham said. ‘Staff numbers have increased with the merging of the Criminal Justice Commission and the Queensland Crime Commission in 2002 while our Proceeds of Crime area has also expanded to meet the growing demand for our services.’

‘The new office allows for future expansion over the next ten years, particularly if we obtain telecommunication intercept powers.’

Mr Needham said that it had been extremely difficult to find suitable city office space for the agency – hence the move to the Valley.

‘After an exhaustive search the Commission, in conjunction with the Department of Public Works, chose the new development, Green Square in Fortitude Valley, as a modern building which ideally suited our needs.’

‘The government has negotiated a competitive rental deal, so in fact, our rental costs will be significantly less than if we had remained in the city.’

The CMC will occupy four floors of the North Tower in the Green Square development, which is situated on the corner of St Pauls Terrace and Constance Street.

The new building is the first to be constructed in Queensland to attract a 6-star Green Star rating, the highest for environmental sustainability.
