CMC finalises Queensland Police Union investigation — 25.01.2008

The Crime and Misconduct Commission has completed its investigation into the conduct of police officers employed by the Queensland Police Union of Employees (QPUE).

An investigation into the matter began in August 2007 after the Queensland Police Service (QPS) received information about concerns regarding the sale of motor vehicles owned by the QPUE to executive members or their families.

The allegation was that motor vehicles were being sold at prices significantly lower than the market value. The CMC investigated the matter as the QPUE comprises a number of elected officials, many of whom are police officers.

Police officer, Gary Wilkinson, the then General President of the QPUE, was questioned regarding the sale of a vehicle, owned by the QPUE, to his wife for a figure considerably below its wholesale market value. He recently retired from the QPS.

After obtaining advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions, the CMC will not pursue any fraud charges against Mr Wilkinson.

The CMC has written to the Industrial Registrar about the process through which the QPUE officials involved in the sale of the motor vehicles carried out their financial management duties under the Industrial Relations Act 1999.

A detailed letter outlining the investigation has been sent to the secretary of the QPUE, as representative of the owners of the property which was the subject of the investigation.

QPUE has advised the CMC that their process for the sale of motor vehicles is being reviewed.
