Jailing of Former Minister serves as a warning — 31.05.2007

Crime and Misconduct Commission (CMC) Chairperson Robert Needham said today’s jailing of former Minister Merri Rose for the offence of demanding a benefit with threats, serves as a strong warning that people who seek to corrupt public servants do so at their peril.

On 30 October 2006 Ms Rose threatened to publicly smear the reputation of a nominated individual unless the Queensland Premier provided her with a highly paid position in the public sector. In the District Court today, Judge Wolfe sentenced Ms Rose to a term of imprisonment of 18 months, to be suspended after 3 months.

Mr Needham said, “In recent times the CMC has conducted two extortion investigations involving public officials both of which resulted in charges being laid against prominent persons within their community. Each defendant pleaded guilty at an early opportunity and was sentenced to a term of imprisonment for their offence.

“Coming forward to report an extortion attempt takes courage.  Reporting extortion threats at the earliest opportunity is the best way to minimise damage to the victim, their family and friends. The CMC, whose jurisdiction is limited to the public sector, will always give priority to any investigation of such allegations, and handles them in a confidential manner,” he said.
