CMC arrests Murrumba Downs man on child exploitation charges – 06.03.2014

This morning the Crime and Misconduct Commission (CMC) arrested a 54-year-old Murrumba Downs man with 17 offences related to the alleged possession and use of a carriage service to make child exploitation material available.

Detectives from the CMC’s Cerberus Team identified the 54-year-old man after he allegedly sent and received child exploitation material via the internet. The CMC executed a search warrant on his Murrumba Downs house this morning where computer equipment allegedly containing images and movies was seized for the purpose of a forensic examination.

The CMC’s Acting Assistant Commissioner Crime, Mr Michael Scott, said possessing child exploitation material and using the internet to make it available is a serious offence and creates a demand for more illegal material to be produced.

“Every single image of a child being exploited is a potential crime scene. There are literally millions of images and videos on the internet and this means there have been millions of individual crimes committed against children all around the world,” Mr Scott said.

“The CMC’s specialist investigators are committed to identifying offenders who possess and make child abuse images available online. We will continue to work in collaboration with our law enforcement partners throughout Australia and internationally so those engaged in the trading of child exploitation material are dealt with by the Courts.”

The 54-year-old man was arrested at his house in Murrumba Downs and transported to the Brisbane City Watch House where he was formally charged with:

  • 2 x Possession of Child Exploitation Material – Section 228D Criminal Code
  • 15 x Use carriage service to make available child pornography – Section 474.19 of Commonwealth Criminal Code

The 54-year-old man was remanded in custody and is expected to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court tomorrow (7 March 2014).

The CMC has now charged seven persons with a total of 91 child exploitation offences relating to use of the internet since 1 July 2013.

CMC investigations into online paedophilia continue.

The CMC’s Cerberus Team is a multidisciplinary crime fighting unit dedicated to investigating internet-based offending, repeat offenders and paedophile networks.
