Police officer charged with grievous bodily harm - 7 July 2016
The Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC) has today charged a 41-year-old Queensland Police Service Constable with grievous bodily harm following an investigation into allegations the officer used excessive force.
It will be alleged the current serving Northern Region officer assaulted a 23-year-old British national following an incident in Cairns on 17 April 2016.
During the alleged assault, the victim sustained a number of injuries which included fractures to the jaw and eye socket.
The CCC has reviewed the available evidence and determined there are reasonable prospects of a successful criminal prosecution.
Today the CCC served a Notice To Appear in court on the 41-year-old Constable. He will face the following charge:
- 1 x Grievous bodily harm contrary to section 320 Qld Criminal Code 1899
The 41-year-old man is expected to appear before the Cairns Magistrates Court on 11 August 2016.
The CCC has advised the Queensland Police Service’s Ethical Standards Command of this decision.
As this matter is now before the court, the CCC is unable to comment further.
