No criminal charges over alleged false or misleading statements — 09.10.2014

On advice from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), the Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC) will not proceed with criminal charges of making false or misleading statements to the former Crime and Misconduct Commission (CMC).

In June 2013, the CMC re-opened an investigation into an allegation of electoral bribery. In December 2013, the CMC finalised the investigation and advised that there was no evidence that a criminal offence of electoral bribery was committed.

At a public meeting in March 2014 with the then Parliamentary Crime and Misconduct Committee, the CMC advised that the re-opened investigation had also examined whether false or misleading statements were made to the CMC and further advised that a brief of evidence had been referred to the ODPP.

Yesterday (8 October 2014), the ODPP informed the CCC that having considered the material provided by the CMC, charges were not warranted.

No further briefs of evidence have been prepared in relation to this matter.

The matter is now finalised and the CCC will make no further comment.
