Man charged for producing and trafficking ice - 14 January 2016

A 21-year-old man has been charged today with 17 serious offences including producing and trafficking methylamphetamine following an organised crime investigation by the Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC).

The CCC’s investigation, known as Operation Gloss, commenced in 2014 and was focused on the Queensland-based activities of a criminal syndicate that was believed to be producing and distributing methylamphetamine in Sydney and the Gold Coast. The CCC’s investigation was assisted by the Queensland Police Service Taskforce Maxima.

The CCC will allege the man trafficked, supplied and possessed methylamphetamine throughout the Gold Coast region in 2014. The CCC will further allege the man was responsible for producing methylamphetamine on two occasions in 2014 in a clandestine laboratory that was located at a Currumbin address during the investigation.

A range of operational matters precluded the CCC from charging the man for these offences prior to today.

A Notice to Appear in court was served today on the 21-year-old man who is currently in custody at the Woodford Correctional Facility.

He is expected to face the following charges in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on 4 February 2016:

  • 1 x trafficking in dangerous drugs, namely methylamphetamine, contrary to section 5 of the Drugs Misuse Act 1986
  • 2 x produce a dangerous drug, namely methylamphetamine, contrary to section 8 of the Drugs Misuse Act 1986
  • 6 x supply a dangerous drug, namely methylamphetamine and cannabis, contrary to section 6 of the Drugs Misuse Act 1986
  • 3 x possession of dangerous drugs, namely methylamphetamine, contrary to section 9 of the Drugs Misuse Act 1986
  • 1 x possession of things for use in commission of a crime, namely scales, contrary to section 10(1)(b) of the Drugs Misuse Act 1986
  • 2 x possession of things for use in commission of a crime, namely laboratory equipment and chemicals, contrary to section 10(1)(a) of the Drugs Misuse Act 1986
  • 1 x possession of suspected property, namely $4650 cash, contrary to section 10(a)(d) of the Drugs Misuse Act 1986
  • 1 x unlawful possession of a weapon, namely a category B firearm, contrary to section 50 the Weapons Act 1990

As this investigation remains ongoing and these matters are now before the court, the CCC is unable to comment further.
