Further fraud and misconduct charges following joint CCC and Department of Education investigation - 18 July 2019

Four people have been recently charged with serious fraud offences following a joint Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC) and Department of Education investigation. This includes a man who was previously charged by the CCC as a result of this investigation.

The joint investigation commenced in March 2018 following allegations department employees and contractors were allegedly defrauding government funds from the Department of Education.

A 37-year-old woman from West End was charged at the Brisbane City Watchhouse on 16 July 2019 with one count of fraud contrary to section 408C of the Criminal Code and one count of misconduct in relation to public office contrary to section 92A of the Criminal Code. It will be alleged the woman committed a fraud of $30,360 and attempted to dishonestly gain $2,500,000 whilst employed by the Department. She is expected to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on 13 August 2019.

A 40-year-old Chapel Hill woman was charged today at the Brisbane City Watchhouse with one count of fraud contrary to section 408C of the Criminal Code and one count of misconduct in relation to public office contrary to section 92A of the Criminal Code. It will be alleged the woman committed a fraud of $30,360 and attempted to dishonestly gain $2,500,000 whilst contracting to the Department. She is expected to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on 2 August 2019.

A 47-year-old Samford Village man was charged on 17 July 2019 at the Brisbane City Watchhouse with seven counts of fraud contrary to section 408C of the Criminal Code. It will be alleged the man committed frauds totalling $362,636 whilst contracting to the Department. He is expected to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on 13 August 2019.

A 47-year-old Gordon Park man was charged today at Fortitude Valley Police Station with eight counts of fraud contrary to section 408C of the Criminal Code and one count of misconduct in relation to public office contrary to section 92A of the Criminal Code.  It will be alleged the man committed frauds of $30,360 and $362,636, and attempted to dishonestly gain $2,500,000 whilst employed by the Department. The man is expected to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on 13 August 2019. This man was previously charged by the CCC on 22 March 2019 with other fraud offences.

A total of five people have now been charged as a result of this joint investigation. A 33-year-old Magill (South Australia) man was previously charged by the CCC on 25 March 2019.

The Department of Education has assisted the CCC and fully cooperated throughout the investigation.

As these matters are now before the court, it is not appropriate for the CCC to comment further.

The CCC is an independent agency combating major crime and reducing corruption for the benefit of the Queensland community.
