A large-scale, high-threat heroin network based in New South Wales with distribution points into Queensland and Victoria has been shut down. The 12-month investigation, codenamed Operation Lightning was led by the CMC and supported by the Queensland Police Service State Drug Investigation Unit and New South Wales Police Drug Squad.
A CMC investigation codenamed Operation Storm dismantled a major drug distribution network operating from the Sunshine Coast to the Gold Coast. The network is believed to have been responsible for distributing at least 20 kg of heroin, with an estimated street value of $25 million.
The CMC conducted a major crime operation in 2009 and 2010, targeting a large-scale organised drug distribution network based on the Gold Coast. The network stretched from Cairns to Melbourne and included criminals in Brisbane, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, Cairns, Townsville, Bowen, Airlie Beach, Sydney and Melbourne. As a result, 73 people were arrested over 420 drug-related charges including trafficking, supply and possession of dangerous drugs. The estimated street value of the drugs seized was approximately $6,800,000.
